“CAMERAS ON PLEASE”

A simple request that can feel surprisingly loaded.

Part of my One Way to Put It collection, this original abstract painting takes a familiar instruction from online meetings and places it within a grid of loosely drawn faces, empty spaces and colourful, textured backgrounds.

Some figures seem distracted, others reluctant to participate. A few barely appear at all. The handwritten instruction sits among them, raising the question of what it really means to be present when everyone is expected to appear on screen.

There’s something slightly absurd about the little boxes we occupy during video calls, and the expectation that switching on a camera somehow means we’re paying attention.

The series explores what happens when ordinary things we say, write and think are isolated and given space to mean something else.
