“I thought there would be more time.”

An ordinary sentence that can suddenly mean rather a lot.

Part of my One Way to Put It collection, this original abstract painting was inspired by photographs of my retina taken during appointments at the eye hospital. The yellow circle represents the optic nerve, surrounded by an abstracted landscape of reds, oranges and darker forms drawn from the retinal imagery.

Living with progressive sight loss gives the words a particular meaning for me, but the sentence isn't only about sight. Taken out of context, it might speak of ageing, memory, relationships, missed opportunities or simply the feeling that time has moved more quickly than we expected.

The series explores what happens when ordinary things we say, write and think are isolated and given space to mean something else.
